ABOUT CKI
Congregation Kol Israel is a warm and inclusive modern Orthodox shul on the border of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights, Brooklyn, founded in 1924. CKI offers a community with an “out of town” feel within a stone’s throw of Brooklyn’s hip and heimish neighborhoods. The membership (~55 units) is eclectic in background and outlook, and reflects both the shul’s historic resilience and the dynamic and young neighborhood in which it is situated. CKI has no official affiliation with any umbrella organization, and is fiercely committed to upholding both its historic charter, and its historic reputation as the friendliest shul in Brooklyn.

ABOUT THE POSITION
CKI is seeking a part-time Rabbi or spiritual leader of our congregation. The ideal candidate is warm, comfortable with all kinds of people, passionate about community building, and capable of guiding the community on halachic and religious matters in a thoughtful and nuanced manner. The position requires 36+ weeks/year of weekly in-person presence for shabbat, holidays, Sunday morning minyan and weekday Torah teaching. The community can host suitable candidates and their families for shabbat on a weekly basis, however preference will be given to individuals who live or will relocate to within walking distance from the shul.

COMPENSATION: $40,000-$65,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

DUTIES

• Maintaining a consistent presence in the shul and the lives of its congregants
• Providing religious guidance and offering pastoral care, including support for lifecycle events
• Connecting with all attendees at the synagogue, both longstanding and new
• Engaging in outreach in the neighborhood
• Serving as a resource to prospective congregants
• Supporting the Board in its fundraising efforts
• Attendance at board meetings

It is understood that the position is part-time, and that the Rabbi or Spiritual Leader will likely have separate part- or full-time employment. The Board and the Congregation will be understanding of this and will keep their expectations realistic within those boundaries. The Board also understands that its support and partnership, and the active involvement of the shul’s membership, are essential to enabling the Rabbi or Spiritual Leader to succeed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Orthodox smicha or equivalent, demonstrated experience in community building and pastoral care.

EXPECTED START DATE: September 2024. Probeh shabbatot will be scheduled beginning in May 2024.
